About
Kat Roberts is a New York-based fashion educator, designer, and interdisciplinary artist. She earned a PhD in Apparel Design from Cornell University. Additionally, she received a Masters degree from the Fashion Studies program from the CUNY Graduate Center, two Associates degrees from Fashion Institute of Technology in Accessories Design and Illustration, and a Bachelor of Social Work from Appalachian State University.
Her primary research interests are upcycled fashion, the circular economy, ethical/sustainable fashion, labor, and the intersection of technology with hand crafts. In additional to traditional research, she also has an active art and design practice which includes documentary filmmaking, curated exhibitions, and mixed media art pieces. This creative scholarship centers fashion, consumption, waste diversion, and drawing attention to labor in the fashion industry.
Prior to pursuing her graduate studies, she worked for over ten years as a fashion instructor, teaching a wide array of studio and lecture courses to adult learners and undergraduate students. She held past positions at the Fashion Institute of Technology, The Textile Arts Center, and The New York City College of Technology, CUNY.
